Pushkar

Situated some 14km outside of Ajmer, Pushkar is one of the holiest pilgrimage sites in India. Pilgrims from all over the country come here to bathe in the sacred waters of the Pushkar lake. The lake is said to be created when one of the petals of the lotus flower, which lord Brahma used as a weapon to kill the demon Vajra, fell down to the earth. Pushkar's Brahma temple is said to be only one of its kind in the world. A dip in the waters of Pushkar and worship at his temple ensure salvation. So thousands flock to Pushkar to observe the ritual on Kartik Purnima, or on any of the four days preceding it. It is during the same time the annual Pushkar Camel festival is held.
